Plastic Pollution

Toothpaste, Landfills and Germs

We all brush our teeth twice a day (hopefully), but have you ever thought about the environmental impact of toothpaste tubes? Even though some companies are making an effort to create fully recyclable tubes, most tubes of toothpaste that you buy are made of non-recyclable multi-layer plastic, and they all end up in landfills. We’re getting better at reducing plastic waste and many single use items, like straws, have been banned in many places. Unfortunately, we’re still lagging behind when it comes to toothpaste.

Toothpaste tubes fill landfills

Every single year, 1.5 billion toothpaste tubes end up in landfills and the plastic in those tubes needs 500 years to degrade. That means that brushing your teeth every day contributes to plastic in landfills and in the oceans in a big way, but we can’t exactly stop brushing our teeth, so what can we do?

Toothpaste without the tube

Well, there are other options for toothpaste tube materials, like metal. But a metal tube is far more likely to rip and cause a big mess, which nobody wants. Developing fully recyclable toothpaste tubes seems like the most sensible option, but couldn’t we just do away with the tube completely?

Toothpaste tube  germs

Getting rid of toothpaste tubes isn’t just about being more environmentally friendly, it’s also about being more hygienic. You may not have thought about it before, but you’re touching your toothbrush with the toothpaste tube after everybody else in the house has used it on their brush, which they put in their mouth.  What if somebody else in the house has the flu? If you share a toothpaste tube, you’re probably going to get it as well. It’s a very quick way to spread germs and it’s not that much different from sharing a toothbrush, there are just a few extra steps.

Individual toothpaste pods

The good news is, we’ve got the perfect solution to both of these issues. Poppits toothpaste pods are a great alternative to old fashioned toothpaste tubes because they’re environmentally friendly and way more hygienic. Simply pop a pod in your mouth, it dissolves and the toothpaste is released, then you just brush as you normally would. The toothpaste is wrapped in a soluble film that is food grade and completely non-toxic. The biodegradable film simply dissolves and turns to carbon dioxide and water, so there are no negative environmental impacts.

If you add up all of the toothpaste tubes you will use in your lifetime, you’ll realize just how much impact one person can have, so switching to Poppits is a simple way to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. You don’t need to worry about picking up any nasty germs from sharing a dirty toothpaste tube with everybody else, and your bathroom is a lot cleaner because you don’t have to contend with old bits of dried out toothpaste that collect around the top of the tube.

Environmentally friendly toothpaste

The way that you use toothpaste is changing and now you have options. You can ditch the gunky toothpaste tube and swap it for a shiny aluminum  tin instead. Your bathroom will be cleaner and you’ll cut plastic pollution at the same time. Now that’s something to smile about.
